Church mission teams stranded by violence in Haiti return to Alabama

TRUSSVILLE, Alabama – Two Alabama mission teams returned to the state after being stranded in Haiti for several days as the price of fuel increased.

The teams at Faith Community Church in Trussville and members of the First Baptist Church group in Russellville returned to Alabama this week. Groups of nearly 50 students and chaperones were in a secure compound since July 7.

The Bureau of Consular Affairs of the State Department advised US citizens to travel. The incident caused the closure of the Port-au-Prince airport and the stoppage of many flights to and from the United States

The cancellation of flights has forced church groups and volunteers from a number of US states, especially from the South. Carolina, Florida, Georgia and Alabama.

Church Leaders Say Another Group Should Be On the Road

First Baptist Pastor Patrick Martin is traveling to Haiti. In a post on Facebook, he urged people to pray for travelers

Martin added, "We will come back. I promise. "
