FALMOUTH, MA – Two police officers who respond to a 21-year-old man smashing bottles ended up shooting Friday night, closing a neighborhood in East Falmouth and expelling an area where too many officers have been killed in the line of duty this year.
The three people involved had to survive, the officials said.
"Nothing in the police work is routine … no call is routine," said Falmouth Police Chief Edward Dunne.
Cape & Islands District Attorney, Michael O 'Keefe, said that a policeman had received two bullets, once in the vest and once over the vest. This agent, who was still in the hospital, spoke with his family, including his three children. The other officer was grazed on the head by a bullet. He was treated and released from hospital
The two police officers have been in service for about five years
. The suspect was identified as [219-9005] 21 years old, Malik Koval. He was shot several times and was hospitalized in Boston.
Police responded to Ashley Drive at approximately 5:25 pm to a report of a man breaking bottles. Koval became agitated when the police confronted him, got a gun from his house, and shot officers, authorities said.
Ashley Drive is in the Seacoast Shores area of East Falmouth. People in the area were not allowed to return home on Friday night.

In April, Yarmouth Police Officer Sean Gannon was killed while he was serving a warrant for arrest. This happened a few miles from Falmouth, near Barnstable.
Earlier this month, Michael Chesna, a policeman from Weymouth, was also killed in the line of duty.
