The Kansas water slide on which a 10-year-old boy was beheaded two years ago will be demolished later in the year, officials said Thursday.
The Kansas City Schlitterbahn Water Park had arranged for the 17-story Verrückt to slide down to be pulled down after Labor Day, Fox 4 KC reported. The demolition should be completed in about three weeks.
Caleb Schwab died on August 7, 2016 after the raft he was driving took off and struck an air loop. The trip was stopped immediately. In November, park officials announced that the blade would be destroyed after the end of a criminal investigation into Caleb's death.
Six people were charged with Caleb's death: Jeffrey Henry, co-owner of Schlitterbahn, Texas. Waterparks and Resorts; John Schooley, one of the Verruckt slide designers; Tyler Miles, former director of operations at Kansas City Park; the company that built Verruckt – which means "crazy" in German – and two maintenance workers. All the defendants pleaded not guilty.
Earlier this week, The Kansas City Star reported that four other rides at Schlitterbahn Kansas City had remained closed after state auditors found that they did not meet the requirements
. State amusement park regulations, most dealing with record keeping and safety signs. However, a recently published Department of Labor document at The Star showed that two of the rides had maintenance problems.
