MEM: copper production decreased by 0.2% in the first half of 2018

Copper production decreased by 0.2% year-on-year in the first half of 2018 compared to the same period of 2017, reported the Directorate General of Mines (MEM). The decline is explained by the decline in production levels at Antamina and Las Bambas despite a recovery of 9.3% recorded by Cerro Verde . In June, copper production was down 3.4% from May.

The growth of iron production showed a good performance between January and May, which made it possible to contain the June decline which was 23.6% due to a lower performance of the mining unit CPS1 of Shougan Peru. On the other hand, Antamina contributed to the growth of zinc, which allowed Áncash to consolidate itself as the first producing region of this metal. . Their participation was 37.4%, followed by Junín with 18.9% and Pasco with 15.6%. In addition, in June, molybdenum increased by 10% compared to May. There were positive results in Cerro Verde and Antamina.

With regard to tin, it continued to grow and reached a 0.8% increase in production in the first half. Minsur built the project "Tailings Reuse B2", which will produce 45,000 tons of fine tin for about 9 years.

The production of gold is reduced because of lower volumes obtained by ] Minera Barrick Misquichilca Compañía de Minas Buenaventura and Minera Yanacocha in the first half although in June it rose 2.1%. In June, silver production was reduced by 13% compared to the same month of 2017.
