Mother survives a car accident that killed her husband, 4 girls

TOWNSEND, Del. – A family spokesman identified the New Jersey family that was killed in the Friday crash in Townsend, Delaware, reports CBS Philadelphia. The spokesman identified the father as Audie Trinidad, 61 years old. The children were identified as Kaitlyn, 20, Danna, 17, and Melissa and Allison, 13.

His wife, 53-year-old Mary Rose, was transported to a local hospital after suffering serious but non-fatal injuries.

Husband and wife were properly tied up in the vehicle, police said, but their four daughters were not there. The accident occurred around 3:45 pm. on Highway 1, the main north-south artery of the state

State Police Mr. Cpl. Melissa Jaffe said Friday that a southbound pickup truck crossed the median and struck a northbound passenger car. It is unclear exactly what caused the van to cross the median.

Jaffe stated that the car was immobilized on the median, while the van continued south on the northbound lanes and was hit by a van carrying the New Jersey family. Both occupants of the van and the single occupant of the car were taken to the hospital with nonfatal injuries.

The photographs of the scene showed a blue tarpaulin covering a white passenger vehicle with massive damage to the front. The roof of the vehicle appeared to have been cut by rescuers and was upside down on the nearby floor. A few steps away was a brown van with an extended cab, which appeared to be a commercial vehicle, with its passenger side caved.

"It's certainly heartbreaking," Jaffe said. "I feel so bad for this family, I can not imagine what they're going through."

Trinidad's brother, Daniel, told the New York Post that "their bodies at the morgue are unrecognizable".

"They are a family that fears God," he said. "They go to church, my brother sent me a picture of the blue crabs that they ate on July 4th, they all left in a blink of an eye."

A family friend, Linda Douglas, who set up a GoFundMe for the family, told NJ.com that Audie Trinidad was "always the dad to pick everyone up in the van.
