When Dwayne Johnson was a full-time wrestling star named "The Rock", she had one last shot: the bend of the city. Johnson is currently the highest paid actor in Hollywood and is also a producer. He is involved in the planning of his films, his research and his income. And what it sells is an entertainment product for the spectators who want to believe everything. That's what is in "Skyscraper" (Skyscraper).
Here Johnson is Will Sawyer, a former police officer who, in agreement with a mission, suffered a serious accident and lost one of his legs . Years later, already recovered and with a prosthesis, is hired as a security advisor to work in the largest building in the world, a new tower in Hong Kong called La Perla, which has 240 floors. As you will assume that this place will be taken by a gang of criminals, a fire is spreading inside and Sawyer must save his family who has been trapped in this huge construction.
The biggest reference of "Skyscraper" is of course "Hard to Kill" which recently turned 30 years of premiere. However, even though La Perla is a very technological tower, almost a spaceship, everything we know about it does not help much when Sawyer is fighting the bad guys. The best action scenes take place outside the building, when the hero is about to fall into the void. Compared to La Perla, the Nakatomi Plaza building in which Bruce Willis was facing a terrorist band was a dangerous trap. Narratively, the space, the tower, was well used. Which proves two things: that "Duro de Matar" has aged very well like all cinema classics, and that "Skyscraper" could have happened in a smaller, less hallucinatory building and the result would have been the same.
Johnson's leg splint is a resource that generates little tension. Most of the time we forget this detail. The film performs action scenes and a jump that breaks with the laws of physics, but feels that it's not the best role for Johnson because it does not take advantage of one of its qualities since the times of the struggle: his charisma on stage. That is why it usually stands out more in action comedies than in papers like this one, which are more physical, where you just have to be hard to beat the bad guys. Dwayne Johnson is Arnold Schwarzenegger of today? Maybe he needs to go up more floors.
What to expect ?: A film without anything original, but very entertaining.
