In 2015 the magazine Nature have confirmed that genetics is the factor that most influences overweight and obesity, its diet or exercise. However, to control excessive fat storage, many specialists focus on eliminating unhealthy eating habits and sedentary lifestyle.

A new study conducted by the University of Taiwan revealed which activities were the most effective in fighting this chronic disease, which affected 24 million people in 2016 in Spain alone.

The research was conducted on 18,000 people aged 30 to 70, who were part of a Chinese biomedical research database.

Posted in the magazine PLoS Genetics, the work confirms this practice to jog (run more slowly) was the best way to control obesity, followed by other sports such as mountain biking, hiking, athletic walking, some modalities of dance and yoga.

According to the authors, these sports help reduce body mass index (BMI) in individuals whose genetics makes them more likely to be overweight. But they must be practiced regularly, that is to say three times a week for at least 30 minutes.

On the other hand, activities such as cycling, stretching or swimming do not prevent the effects of genetics on obesity. "With stretching, we consume less energy and swimming stimulates the appetite," says Wan-Yu Lin, lead researcher of the study.

Genetics of obesity

To analyze the factors influencing obesity, previous research only took into account BMI. "Until now, this unique factor has been examined because it is easy to calculate, but if we only take into account the size and weight, the percentage of fat in the body is rejected," adds Wan-Yu Lin.

The study examined four other indicators of obesity that are also related to metabolic problems. Five main measures were taken: waist circumference and hip circumference, BMI, body fat percentage, and waist-hip relationship.

Although the problem of obesity is complex and multifactorial, this new study specifies the most recommended type of physical activity for people affected by this disease, which is one of the most important complications for health in the world. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), overweight and obesity are the cause of about 2.8 million deaths a year worldwide.
