Spain's trade deficit reappears until May

July 20, 2018, 06:23 Madrid, July 20 (Prensa Latina) The Spanish trade balance recorded a deficit of 12,137 million euros until May, or 23.5% more than during the same period of 2017, informed today the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Tourism.

This result in the first five months of the year was the result of exports of 120 thousand 192 million euros – an increase of 2.8 percent year – and imports valued at 132 thousand 329 million euros, for an increase of 4.4 percent.

Percentage coverage rate of purchases that can be paid with sales of goods manufactured during the same time cycle – stood at 90.8%, compared to 92.2% in January-May 2017

The growth of Spanish exports between January and May was lower than that of the 19 members of the euro zone (3.7%) and that of the 28 countries which enter the European Union (3, 5%)

Shipments to the EU (66.7% of the total) increased by 3.1% year-on-year in the first five months, while shipments to the EU-wide euro area (52.4% of the total) increased by 3.5%
