The building employee found a stuffed woman in a garbage compactor in the compound around 5 pm Tuesday, according to the New York Police Department.
A resident of the building, the 48-year-old woman, was unconscious and unresponsive, police said, and declared dead at the scene. The police did not release his identity.
Investigators retrieved a surveillance video showing a woman leaving her purse in a elevator and moving away, said the NYPD. The woman came out of sight before reaching the garbage compactor.
There is no immediate crime, said the NYPD, because no one else is seen on the video.
The building, Zeckendorf Towers, is located at 1 Irving Place next to Union Square in Lower Manhattan.
The building rents studios for around $ 3,000 a month, according to Street Easy, while the cheapest unit on sale is a studio for $ 995,000. A two-bedroom, two-bath condo costs $ 3.25 million.
