Shortly before 4 p.m., stadium officers were alerted that two people had fallen from the hall level onto the sidewalk, police said.

Two police officers arrived and found the bodies of a 40-year-old woman and her 2-year-old son on the sidewalk.

Officers performed CPR but could not save them, and the mother and baby were pronounced dead at the scene, police said. The names of the victims were not released, but police said they were residents of San Diego.

San Diego Police Homicide Unit investigators were called to the scene “out of caution” after police said the deaths “looked suspicious.”

Investigators are looking for evidence and potential witnesses, and they hope to speak with people who were present when the fall occurred, the statement said.

The San Diego Padres faced the Atlanta Braves on Saturday at 4:15 pm in front of an announced crowd of about 39,000 people.
