New York Mets star Pete Alonso won his second straight MLB Home Run Derby title and also took home a handsome paycheck.
Alonso beat Baltimore Orioles first baseman Trey Mancini, 23-22, and needed all of his time to do so. He wore the chain and held the trophy at the end.

The Mets first baseman won $ 1 million as well as the Home Run Derby Trophy. That’s more money than he’ll earn playing for New York in the 2021 season.
Alonso is still playing on his first contract with the Mets. He was making $ 555,000 in 2019 when his contract was selected by the Mets before the start of this season. In 2020, he was expected to earn over $ 652,000, and in 2021, he made just over $ 676,000.

He still has three years of refereeing before becoming an unrestricted free agent.
Alonso won the Derby in 2019 and was unable to defend it in 2020 due to the coronavirus-hit MLB season. But he was delighted to have the chance to defend his title on Monday.
“It’s great, it never gets old,” he told ESPN afterwards.
Mancini was making his first appearance in the Home Run Derby. He missed the entire 2020 season after battling colon cancer. He hit 16 home runs before the All-Star break.
