Mayor Pete Buttigieg and her husband, Chasten, Sunday visited Jimmy Carter's Sunday class in Plains, Georgia, and then had lunch with the former president.
The mayor of South Bend said it was "humble" to meet with Carter, who also welcomed other 2020 Democrat candidates to his Sunday school class, such as Sense. Cory Booker and Amy Klobuchar.
Carter invited Buttigieg to read and read the Bible to those attending the class at the Maranatha Baptist Church in southern Georgia, the Associated Press reported.
In a seemingly pleasant reference to Buttigieg, the report stated that Carter had at one point provoked laughter from the crowd when he had said, "Do you know him?"

Buttigieg's visit was not announced and some wondered who he was when he entered the room. In response, one participant reportedly said, "Mayor Pete, the presidential candidate."
In a tweet after their meeting, Buttigieg said"I have had the privilege of meeting with President Carter in Plains, Georgia, today.He is a true civil servant and America is blessed for his continued leadership."
Buttigieg's husband, Chasten, in a separate tweet said the two had "a nice visit" to Plains.

Over the past few months, Buttigieg has gone from one of the least-known to the most serious candidates for the nomination to Democratic Democrat of 2020, drawing the media attention tirelessly at the time of his rise in the polls.
The mayor of South Bend, who is an episcopal and openly homosexual Christian, often spoke of his faith throughout the election campaign.
Buttigieg also faced an anti-gay riot while he was campaigning, but he ignored it.
