Democratic candidate Pete Buttigieg likened Bernie Sanders supporters to President Trump's supporters, saying both sides are disgruntled citizens seeking to change the status quo.
The mayor of 37-year-old South Bend, in Indiana, was speaking at a campaign stop in New Hampshire on Friday, when he drew parallels between supporters of diametrically opposed politicians, according to The Washington Examiner.
"I think that the feeling of anger and disaffection that comes from the finding that the numbers are correct, like unemployment, is the case of unemployment, it's as if you said that the GDP was increasing and that many neighborhoods and families live as if this recovery had never happened. They are stuck, "Buttigieg told high school students in Nashua, N.H.
"It rather turns you against the system in general and you are more likely to want to vote to blow up the system, which could lead you to someone like Bernie and someone like Trump. That's how we got where we are.
Buttigieg also attempted to make a distinction between him and the 77-year-old Vermont Democratic Socialist.
"Part of running for president is that you find yourself competing with people you love, whom you enjoy or admire many years ago," he said of Sanders. "I do not have the same views on everything that it does."
