Pete Davidson returns as Kate McKinnon skips Season 47 premiere – Deadline

Saturday Night Live entered Season 47 with eight cast members who had been on the show for at least seven seasons, which is the standard length of a SNL contract: Kenan Thompson (18 seasons), Kate McKinnon (10), Aidy Bryant (9), Cecily Strong (9), Colin Jost (8), Beck Bennett (8), Kyle Mooney (8), Michael Che (7) .

Incredibly, only one of the eight, Bennett, left the NBC program with everyone else returning this season, including Davidson, McKinnon, Bryant and Strong, whose final Season 46 appearance looked like a goodbye.

Few people expected this to happen, including Davidson, apparently. “I can’t believe I’m back,” he exclaimed at the end of his Weekend update segment, in which he discussed his Met Gala outfit while wearing a t-shirt paying homage to the former SNL actor Norm Macdoland who died of cancer last month.

Davidson also improvised at the end of his Weekend update appearance in the Season 46 finale when, in a serious and atypical style, he delivered what sounded like a farewell message, “I am very grateful to be here, and it has been an honor to grow up in front of you guys.”

As Deadline reported earlier this week, SNL boss Lorne Michaels has become more flexible in recent years, allowing Saturday night live biggest stars to combine the show with other projects, which allowed established cast members to stay past the end of their contracts.

For example, Davidson was away for several weeks during filming Suicide Squad, Bryant was also absent while working on his Hulu series. Acute, and thompson juggles SNL with his prime-time comedy series Kenan.

Relaxed politics were on display tonight when McKinnon missed the season premiere while filming the limited series Peacock Exotic Joe in which she plays Carole Baskin.
