Peter Dinklage will star in a reboot of “The Toxic Avenger” for Legendary, Variety confirmed.

Macon Blair would write and direct what is described as a contemporary re-imagining of the 1984 Troma Entertainment hit of the same name. Dinklage will play Toxie, the superhero the film centers around. Lloyd Kaufman and Michael Herz will be the producers of Troma Entertainment.

Originally known as Melvin, the protagonist is disfigured when pushed into a vat of toxic waste and soon takes the nickname Toxie. But, in order to save her son, friends, and community from corruption and greed, Toxie must rise to the occasion as an oppressed hero.

After the debut of the original “Toxic Avenger” movie, it became a cult classic and developed into a music production, a children’s cartoon series, and a Marvel comic book. Toxie has also become something of a mascot for Troma Entertainment.

Dinklage has received critical acclaim for playing Tyrion Lannister in HBO’s “Game of Thrones,” for which he won four Emmy Awards and a Golden Globe. He is currently filming “Cyrano” with director Joe Wright. Other Dinklage credits include “My Dinner with Herve”, “Avengers: Infinity War” and “X-Men: Days of Future Past”.

Blair recently made his directorial debut with Netflix’s “I Don’t Feel At Home In This World Again”, which won the Grand Jury Prize at the 2017 Sundance Film Festival. He also produced and starred in ” Blue Ruin ”by Jeremy Saulnier in 2013.

Dinklage is represented by CAA and Jackoway Austen. Deadline Hollywood was the first to break the news.
