Before Adam Wingard tackled “Godzilla vs. Kong”, there was Peter Jackson’s own version of “Skull Island”.
“Godzilla vs Kong” marks a massive leap in visual effects-focused cinematic making for director Adam Wingard, but it turns out his indie-studio-tentpole transition was originally supposed to take place almost 10 years ago. And not just that, but it was going to take place as Peter Jackson’s planned sequel to his 2005 remake “King Kong”. Jackson took an interest in Wingard as the buzz took off for the filmmaker’s groundbreaking horror film “You’re Next”.
“I think in many ways the reason for [me not having to do a pitch for ‘Godzilla vs. Kong’], we have to travel back in time to about 2013, when “You’re Next” was about to hit theaters, ”Wingard / Film recently said. “Somehow, Peter Jackson had seen an early version of ‘You’re Next’, and he was interested in me doing a sequel to his movie ‘King Kong’.
Wingard continued, “It was just going to be called ‘Skull Island’. Simon Barrett was going to write it. Mary Parent, who now runs Legendary and produced this movie, agreed with that. But that movie was set up at Universal, and the rights to “ King Kong ” ended up at Warner Bros. This movie was dropped, and so was I. Jackson stuck on Mary Parent’s mind.
Warner Bros. eventually moved on with his own version, Jordan Vogt-Roberts’ 2017 tentpole “Kong: Skull Island”, and would land Wingard for “Godzilla vs. Kong”. The filmmaker told IndieWire his goal was always to become a studio director, but not for the reasons you might think.
“I don’t think I’ll ever be an independent filmmaker,” Wingard told Kate Erbland of IndieWire. “I’ve been on a path over the years trying to get to this point. The origins of my desire to become a filmmaker were to try and make great Hollywood science fiction films. These are the films that inspired me to make films, the “Star Wars” films, the “Alien” films. I can’t wait to use the potential power this could buy me, so that I can go back and make smaller movies that I have even more control over. “
“Godzilla vs. Kong” is now playing in theaters and streaming on HBO Max.
