The winter has finally arrived for Game of Thrones – and his latest series gets a chilling welcome.

A petition calling on its manufacturers, HBO, to redo season eight has been signed by more than 500,000 disgruntled fans.

The latest series of the popular television series – based on the books of George RR Martin – has been the subject of much criticism online.

Disappointed viewers were surprised by the narrative structure of the series and the fate of the beloved characters.

The Change.org petition, launched after the release of the penultimate episode of this week, goes further by demanding a complete restitution "with competent writers".

He argues that the authors of the series, David Benioff and DB Weiss, "proved to be terribly incompetent".

The authors of the petition, "have no source of reference", alluding to the unpublished season of the eighth year of the books.

Because Martin's next book, The Winds Of Winter, is still under development, the television series has a different end.

"This series deserves a last season that makes sense," reads the petition. "Subvert my expectations and get there, HBO!"

Those who signed the petition left comments claiming that the last series "seemed hasty", "totally disrespectful of the author" and threw eight years of character development "in the sewer".

"The season has destroyed everything that was built throughout the series, because of the hasty storytelling, the poor development of the characters and the general lack of care," wrote a signatory.

Given the stated cost of each episode – about $ 15 million (- £ 11.7 million) – HBO is unlikely to abandon the requirements of the petition.

And in the end, an impressive number of viewers are still tuning into the program. HBO has announced that a record 18.4 million viewers on all its platforms had watched the episode last Sunday – the penultimate of the series.

The denouements, as I have admitted MM. Benioff and Weiss have always been controversial.

"A good story is not a good story if you have a bad ending," Mr. Benioff told Entertainment Weekly. "Of course we worry."

The BBC has contacted HBO for comments.

The final episode of this fantastic drama is scheduled to air this Sunday on HBO in the United States, and in the early hours of Monday on Sky Atlantic in the UK.
