Pfennigs and Armstrong Pace Beavers win 9-2 at Grand Canyon

PHOENIX – Jake pfennigs held the Grand Canyon with two hits in six scoreless innings to give Oregon State a 9-2 victory on Saturday afternoon at Brazell Field at GCU Ballpark.

Pfennigs kicked off his second career quality start after pulling out four in his second appearance of the 2021 season. Grand Canyon (3-4 overall) managed to put just two runners in goal position against the second.

Pfennigs took the win to go 1-0 this season and 4-3 for life.

Neither team did a lot of offense in the first five innings, but the Beavers opened the game by sending 10 batters home in the sixth. OSU scored the first when Preston Jones walked with bases loaded.

OSU (6-1) went 2-0 via a wild throw, then 3-0 when Joe casey was hit with a 3-1 pitch. Troy claunch capped the set with a two-out, two-run single down the middle for the five-point lead.

The Grand Canyon tackled two runs in the eighth when Elijah Buries opted out of the relief Year hunter, bringing two. He broke a 13 scoreless innings streak by the OSU pitching staff.

Chase watkins relieved Hunter in the eighth and won the last two strikeouts of the inning to hold onto the 5-2 lead.

Oregon State scored four points in the ninth. Andy armstrong, Kyle Dernedde, Ryan ober and Joe casey all of them each drove in a race to push the OSU wire to 9-2.

Armstrong doubled twice and led the Beavers with three hits. Ober finished 2 for 3 with three steps, while Casey and Kyler mcmahan had two hits each too.

GCU starter Jack Schneider lasted four innings before being called out in favor of right-hander Keaton Glover. It was Glover who took the loss after allowing two hits and five runs in 1 2/3 innings. He took out five but also walked three. Glover is now 0-1 on the year.

Oregon State and the Grand Canyon conclude their four-game streak on Sunday. The first pitch at Brazell Field at GCU Ballpark is scheduled for 11 a.m. PT (12 p.m. Arizona).

Great in the sixth

Oregon State’s five points in the sixth inning pushed OSU’s season total to 19 in the frame this season. OSU has scored more runs in the sixth than its pitching team has allowed in total this season.

Starters through three games

Oregon State Starting Pitchers – Kevin abel, Cooper Hjerpe and Jake pfennigs – combined to limit the Grand Canyon to just seven hits and one run in 17 innings. They combined to deliver just five marches with 17 strikeouts.

Top six

Oregon State’s top six hitters – Preston Jones, Ryan ober, Joe casey, Troy claunch, Kyler mcmahan and Andy armstrong – combined to go 11 for 27 with four doubles, nine steps and seven RBIs.

Six-game series

Oregon State’s victory pushed the Beavers’ winning streak to six games, the longest since the 2019 club won their first 10 games of the season.

13 walks

The Oregon state offense totaled 13 walks for just seven strikeouts. The 13 steps surpassed the team’s best of 12 against Gonzaga on February 21.

Back in programming
Matthew gretler, Justin boyd and Kyle Dernedde all made their second starts of 2021. For Boyd, it was his first since the season opened Feb. 19 against Kansas State. Gretler and Dernedde, meanwhile, both made their first starts in Game 3 of the season, Feb.21 against Gonzaga. Fifteen players in different positions made at least one start in 2021, of which 14 made two or more.
