PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla .– After his win at the Arnold Palmer Invitational on Sunday, Bryson DeChambeau was asked if he intends to take a different approach with his length at this week’s players’ championship, as he has done by hitting the pilot over the lake. at the sixth hole par 5 at Bay Hill.
“I sometimes thought of 18 going left into 9,” said DeChambeau, referring to avoiding the lake that hugs the left side of the narrow 18th fairway. “It just gives you a better shot on the green where you can just hit it a bit long and you’ll still be OK. The blanket (wear) is like 310 [yards], but we’ll see. I will look at all the options if there is a benefit there. But if not, I’m just going to hit the 4 iron on the fairway and hopefully an 8 or 7 iron in the green. ”
On Tuesday morning, DeChambeau said he planned to “probably try, but that probably won’t happen.”
On Tuesday afternoon, the PGA Tour released a statement with a newly drafted local rule prohibiting players from hitting the ninth hole from the 18th tee.
“In the interest of the safety of spectators, volunteers and other staff, the Players Championship Rules Committee has set up an indoor out of bounds to the left of the lake for the game of hole 18. Open Championship (hole 9 ) in 2017, the Sony Open 2021 in Hawaii (hole 13 and hole 18), and more recently, the 2021 Arnold Palmer Invitational presented by Mastercard (hole 6). ”
With DeChambeau almost certain not to attempt this in competition, the whole exchange was rather humorous.
After his win on Sunday, when asked about tournaments that tried to change courses for him in the way they used to ‘protect them from the tigers’ to fight Tiger Woods’ length, DeChambeau said, “I don’t think you can test Bryson. a golf course. ”
There is, however, a Bryson rule in place this week.
