For the fifth time in his NFL career, Blake Countess signed a contract with the Philadelphia Eagles. So far, Auburn’s former defensive back has played two regular season games with Philadelphia.
The Eagles announced the countess’s signature on Monday as they relinquished Obi Melifonwu security. Rodney McLeod, who is expected to be the solid starting safety, remains on Philadelphia’s list of physically unable to perform athletes as he recovers from an ACL tear suffered on December 13.
The Countess’s association with the Eagles began when Philadelphia selected him to Auburn in the sixth round of the 2016 NFL Draft. Countess had played one season at Auburn, joining the Tigers as a graduate transfer from Michigan in 2015. He opened his career at Auburn as a starting cornerback, then moved to safety after three games.
Philadelphia freed Countess at the end of the 2016 preseason, and he ended up on the Los Angeles Rams practice squad. Los Angeles activated him in time for the last five games of the season, and he started the last two in 2016. Countess was sacked on his first NFL start.
Countess played every game of his second season as a Rams high school special team and high school reserve. He was on the field for 325 special team games and took 164 defensive snaps. Countess made his first interception in the NFL, contributed 16 tackles in defense and returned a blocked 16-yard punt for his first NFL touchdown.
The Countess reached the Super Bowl in her third season in the NFL. With 356 special teams played during the regular season, the Countess played a pivotal role in the third phase of the game for the Rams, and he was the NFC Special Teams Player of the Week for the third week of the 2018 season, when he turned a stuck punt into a touchdown again. The Countess also played 58 snaps in the Los Angeles high school, intercepted one pass and smashed two more. He returned 17 kickoffs for an average of 24.6 yards in 2018, too.
On March 13, 2019, the Rams placed an initial tender on Countess in an attempt to prevent him from leaving the team in free agency. It worked when the Countess signed the $ 2.025 million contract offer.
But on May 2, 2019, the Rams gave up on Countess in a salary cap move. Los Angeles may have re-signed him at a lower price, but the Rams didn’t get the chance. The Eagles have demanded waivers from Countess.
Philadelphia released Countess after sustaining a hamstring injury in their first preseason game in August 2019.
The Countess returned to the field on October 21, 2019 with the New York Jets and played six of their remaining 11 games. New York has used Countess exclusively on special teams and he has entered the field for 52 games.
The Jets released Countess on March 11, 2020, and he didn’t return to the NFL until December 16, when he joined the Eagles’ practice squad.
Countess has played in two of Philadelphia’s last three games as a training team elevation. He made three tackles in 2020, then re-signed for $ 990,000 to stay with the Eagles in 2021. With a reserve / future contract, Countess would have been added to Philadelphia’s roster on March 17, when the year NFL’s 2021 commercial began, but with six sureties already under contract for the 2021 season, the Eagles released Countess on March 9.
Philadelphia begins their pre-season schedule against the Pittsburgh Steelers Thursday night.
