Conference contenders Philadelphia Union and Seattle Sounders maintained their respective invitations after a 0-0 draw Saturday at Talen Energy Stadium.

While the Union had a whole week to prepare for this match, Seattle was resting after winning 2-1 Wednesday at home against Orlando City. Considering the number of injuries in the team and the short rotation, the Sounders head coach, Brian Schmetzer, decided to make five changes to his starting lineup. Philadelphia welcomed back goalie Andre Blake after missing four games with an injury.

The Union had a firm grip on the game in the first half, but despite holding two-thirds of the ball possession, both teams had a perfect shot in 45 minutes, both saved.

While the match was still scoreless and Philadelphia was under intense pressure, substitute Ilsinho set up Brenden Aaronson, but the younger goalkeeper was overtaken in the 69th minute. Two minutes later, Haris Medunjanin forced a free kick saved by Stefan Frei to keep him 0-0.

Three things

  • THE GREAT IMAGE: Both teams are unbeaten in six games with this result. Although both sides feel they could have had more, the balance between the contenders is strong. The Union will have more reason to be disappointed with the amount of control it has had on the match, but the Sounders will likely be thrilled with the attack on the road.
  • MOMENT OF THE GAMEMedunjanin's free-kick save allowed the Sounders to stay in the game and ultimately contributed to the result.
  • MAN OF THE GAME: Stefan Frei was called on to do a good part of the lift for Seattle and he duly delivered, with six saves and one punch in the night.
