100 days with Huawei P20 Pro: we will stay together

First, the worst defects

View: grappling with scratches and dirt

The P20 Pro features a 6.1-inch OLED display with bright colors, deep blacks and good brightness. This is a big screen that has proved very handy especially for watching videos and TV shows on the go. The hack, personally, did not bother me and I quickly got used to this new presence.

After 100 days of use, the screen of my P20 Pro and that of my colleague Steffen already show several scratches. I made a big mistake in removing the protective film provided: it would have been better to protect the screen from scratches and fingerprints.

EMUI: still to improve

Personally, EMUI has never disappointed me and with its various customization options, it is able to meet different needs. Do not you like the notch? You can hide it. Navigation keys? I prefer not to have them on the screen but the alternative is there. Not to mention that the system is updated to the latest version not only of EMUI but also of Oreo.

There is one aspect that is boring during use: the presence of annoying notifications, such as those concerning batteries less than 20%, which can not be turned off. Those related to third-party applications, however, sometimes arrive together and late. In short, although overall the software is well optimized with the hardware, Huawei still has something to do to improve it.

A Cold-blooded Companion

The Kirin 970, though being a 2017 processor, has proven performance. It is only with the daily experience, however, that the defects come to the fore. What I consider to be flaws of the P20 Pro is its excessive overheating during long play sessions with challenging graphics.

Even when charging and outdoors during hot summer days, the device tends to overheat slightly but not too much. My colleague Steffen also had the same problem with his P20 Pro during the game:

However, this could soon change with the arrival of the Turbo GPU, the technology that should optimize the efficiency of the game. device by increasing the performance of the GPU (the graphics calculation efficiency will improve by 60% with a SoC energy saving of 30% and a positive benefit for the battery). You just have to wait for the update in August!

… and its merits

An excellent camera

Beyond the evaluation of DxOMark, the rear camera of the P20 Pro is really amazing. It's in terms of photo quality and ease of use. The camera application is intuitive and suitable for any type of user. The tip and click, the mode I must admit to use most often, is at the center of concentrated topics, rich details and bright colors.

These, with AI active, are sometimes excessive but the problem can be solved basically by disabling this feature (I hope Huawei will implement the ability to choose between the two shots of the Gallery as on Honor 10). In general, I must say that it is an advantage because the IA changes the settings on which many users would be involved in the editing after the shoot.

The 3x zoom, freehand shooting and portraits are the aspects that I enjoy most in the daily use of the camera. And in case you have not been used to other devices of the brand before, I suggest you to try the editing options directly from the gallery: beyond the filters (the choice is more varied than "instagram"), Splash mode is a great tool for black and white lovers. Do not be fascinated by the P20 Pro's camera is really difficult …

Good battery life and fast charging just in case

The P20 Pro's non-removable battery provides 4000 mAh. The mAh themselves do not say anything about the actual daily performance but the Kirin 970 with software support can allow the battery to stay alive for at least a day (around 5 hours with active display). Sometimes until the next morning.

This, at least, in my case using my smartphone to check emails, whatsappare, browse Facebook and Instagram, take photos, play songs on Spotify and videos on YouTube and Netflix. The way you use your camera and the amount of video you consume will visibly affect the life of your battery, you'll notice. As always, SuperCharge charging has proven to be a useful feature: 50% battery life in about 30 minutes of charging time.

A falling price

The P20 Pro was launched in three different colors (Black, Midnight Blue and Twilight) priced at 899 euros, but US fans can get it from Amazon for $ 799. An important note, however, in addition to being lower than that of other flagships, in recent months has already declined. Of course, carrier contracts are out of the question, but keep an eye on prices and you could get a good deal even as an import.

Conclusion

These months with the Pro P20 have been positive and, for the moment, my SIM card is still in the latest flagship store of Huawei. There are good alternatives on the market but, for the moment, I can not find another smartphone to put aside the P20 Pro.

Despite the camera protruding over the body and the subdivision of the photographic lenses that could all have been grouped into one section, I find the P20 Pro's design really nice; the size of the phone is not compact but the device is always practical.
