MANILA – The Commission on Human Rights has lauded Australian nun Sister Patricia Fox for her dedication to help the poor during her nearly 3 decades of stay in the Philippines.
In a statement Monday, the CHR spokesperson Jacqueline Ann de Guia also reminded the government of its “human rights obligations,” following the departure of Fox, who has been accused of joining “illegal political activities” in the country.
“Founded on the universality of human rights, being a foreign national did not prevent her from dedicating almost three decades of her life addressing, within her means, an array of injustices and violations against the rights of the most vulnerable and marginalized in our country,” the CHR said.
The Bureau of Immigration earlier ordered the nun’s deportation for supposedly violating the terms of her missionary visa by allegedly joining “partisan political activities” after she took part in a human rights fact-finding mission in Mindanao.
Fox, whom President Rodrigo Duterte ordered investigated for supposed “disorderly conduct,” still has a pending appeal against her deportation case. But the 72-year-old missionary already left the country last Saturday after her temporary visitor visa expired.
The nun has repeatedly denied taking part in “partisan political activities,” insisting that her missionary work involved dealing with farmers, indigenous peoples, and victims of social injustice—people commonly helped by Left-leaning organizations.
