Live playoffs begin next week.
The Knockouts ended on The voice Monday night, with nine other artists qualifying for live play-offs next week. This season's main advisor, Mariah Carey, has joined coaches Adam Levine, Blake Shelton, Kelly Clarkson and Jennifer Hudson to prepare the interpreters for their face-to-face confrontations. Clarkson and Shelton both had saves in the night and Hudson still had a volley.
The first couple came from the Kelly team: Chevel Shepherd and Sarah Grace. Shepherd leans on her country sound and chooses to sing "Travelin 'Soldier" of the Dixie Chicks. Carey worked with her on her storytelling abilities. In her last performance, she demonstrated impressive confidence and control for a young singer. It was a solid pop-country performance that played to its strength.
Meanwhile, Grace sang "I'd rather be a blind man" by Etta James, showing her bluesy tone. Carey has helped her in her phrasing, offering a new mature and confident performance from a teenage singer. She drew on the emotions of the song and Levine praised her ability to move. Clarkson chose Shepherd as the winner, but then used her backup to keep Grace in the competition as well.
Then DeAndre Nico and Jake Wells from the Adam team. Nico, who occupied four seats, sang "Wanted" by Hunter Hayes. In rehearsal, they changed the key so that Nico could display his top register and the choice paid off. He gave a soul performance and made the song his.
Wells sang "Yellow" by Coldplay, accompanying herself on the piano. The performance was not as simple as Nico's, but he made some interesting creative choices and still managed to connect even while staying behind the piano. However, Levine chose Nico as the winner and Wells went home.
Anthony Arya and Kennedy Holmes of Team Jennifer followed. Arya sang "Operator" Jim Croce, who was perfectly in his hallway. He had fun with it, showcasing his sound back, but it was not the most memorable performance.
At just 13, Holmes is one of the youngest artists still competing in the competition. She chose a daring song interpreting Pink's "What About Us". She had a great variety and an impressive creative instinct, with an experience beyond her years. Hudson unsuccessfully chooses Holmes as the winner and Arya withdraws from the contest.
Colton Smith and Kirk Jay of the Blake team followed with a pair of equal performances. Smith sang "Lady Marmalade", an ambitious song to choose from, but he has proven in the past that he has a wide range and that he can excel in unexpected song choices.
Jay gave a more typical performance to the Blake team, while retaining his national roots in his cover of Brett Young's "In Case You Did not'Tnow." He also proved able to hit the treble, and he connected to the emotions of the song, transmitting a strong narrative. Shelton went with the conventional country singer, choosing Jay as the winner. Hudson then stole Smith, who started on his team earlier in the season before Shelton stole him.
The following ones were Delaney Silvernell and Steve Memmolo of Team Adam. Silvernell made another bold choice of the evening by singing "Praying" from Kesha. She did it without making too many changes to the original melody, giving a powerful and emotional performance that stands out.
Memmolo sang "Unaware" by Allen Stone and Levine encouraged him to repeat himself in repetition to build on his falsetto. He also gave a layered performance, emotional and had a wonderful tone. Levine was surprised by choosing Memmolo as the winner and Silvernell returned home – the biggest dissatisfaction of the evening.
For the last KO of the season, a stop was guaranteed because Shelton still had one. Chris Kroeze and Michael Lee of the Blake team clashed and Kroeze sang Cam's "Burning House". Showing great artistic strength, he created his own arrangement, and these risks were profitable, thus making his performance memorable.
Lee sang "Whipping Post" of the Allman Brothers, accompanying himself on the guitar but not letting his instrument play dominate his voice. He has also made strong artistic choices. Shelton could have been a winner with anybody, so he launched a coin and Lee won. But then Shelton saved Kroeze, keeping them both in the competition.
The remaining artists will participate in the live shows starting next week on NBC.
