Twenty compete for the seat of SC Justice Tijam

MANILA, Philippines – The Judicial and Bar Council has received a total of 20 applications for a seat on the Supreme Court.

The Justice Secretary, Menardo Guevarra, a member of the JBC because of his post, gave the list of candidates for the post to be released by Associate Judge Noel Tijam next year:

  • Manuel Barrios, Associate Judge at the Court of Appeal
  • Associate Judge of the Court of Appeal, Ramon Bato Jr.
  • The Court of Appeal, associate judge Apolinario Bruselas Jr.
  • Sandiganbayan President of the Court Amparo Cabotaje-Tang
  • Rosemari Carandang, associate judge at the Court of Appeal
  • Associate Judge of the Court of Appeal, Ramon Cruz
  • Stephen Cruz, Associate Judge at the Court of Appeal
  • Sandiganbayan, associate judge Efren de la Cruz
  • Associate Judge Edgardo Delos Santos of the Court of Appeal
  • Associate Judge Japar Dimaampao of the Court of Appeal
  • Court of Appeal Ramon Garcia, Associate Judge
  • Rita Linda Jimeno, Vice-Dean of Laws, La Salle
  • Amy Lazaro-Javier, associate judge at the Court of Appeal

The JBC closed its applications on Monday, November 5th.

Tijam must retire from the SC on January 5, 2019. He is the second member appointed by President Rodrigo Duterte to the High Court.

There are two vacant posts on the Oversight Committee, as the JBC has not yet published a shortlist of candidates for the post vacated by Teresita De Castro when she was appointed deputy judge and when she retired.

The Council is also expected to publish a shortlist of candidates for the position of Chief Justice.

The JBC has received five nominations for the position of supreme judge: Senior Associate Magistrate Antonio Carpio, Deputy Judges Diosdado Peralta, Lucas Bersamin, Estela Perlas-Bernabe and Andres Reyes Jr.
