Part of Riverside Drive and College Street were closed Friday after a wreck involving several vehicles, including two elevators used to paint a pedestrian bridge, according to Clarksville police.
The wreck occurred on Riverside Drive at the intersection of College Street at approximately 11:37 am and caused several serious injuries.
A Ford F-450 truck driven by a 31-year-old man headed south on Riverside Drive through a work area and, for some unknown reason, did not maintain the pattern of movement of the work area, said Clarksville Police Department spokesman Jim Knoll.
"He collided with a patrol car, continued on his way, hit two work lifts occupied by two men and stalled," Knoll said.
Lifeflight transported two men to the ski lifts in Nashville and three more to an ambulance at the Tennova Medical Center.
Both elevators were used to repaint the pedestrian bridge over Riverside and the patrol car was still, Knoll said.
Riverside was closed at Jefferson Street and Main Street, and College Street at Spring Street.
Traffic was disrupted throughout the downtown area as people bypassed traffic jams. Officials present at the scene said that the wreckage was important and that they had no estimate of how long the roads were closing. They urged motorists to use other routes.
The accident is under investigation.
