Dengue epidemic reported more than 10 Ozamiz villages

OZAMIZ CITY – Local health authorities reported an outbreak of dengue in more than 10 villages in that city after 483 people became infected with the mosquito-borne disease from January to June, causing 10 deaths.

The office reported that the villages of Tinago, Maningcol, Aguada, Bañadero, Malubang, Triunfo, Catadman, Carmen Annex, Carangan and Molicay recorded the highest number of dengue patients

. Holly Tago, head of health at Ozamiz, said the latest disease surveillance reports revealed an "unusual surge" in dengue cases in the 10 villages

"The data analysis suggests that if a such trend persists, "Tago said.

"Our data showed that the figures in [first] six months of 2018 already exceed [figures for] 2017. For the whole of 2017, we had 200 cases," she said

. The dengue cases were recorded at Ozamiz four years ago, at 521.

"We are afraid that if we do not act quickly … we [will] see more than 1000 cases in six months. The higher the number of cases, the higher the probability of death, "said Tago.

Bunny Lou Marie Binaoro, Chair of the Department of Pediatrics Mayor Hilarion A. Ramiro Sr. Medical Center (MHARSMC), stressed the importance of early detection of the disease.
