Emmy Nominations 2018: Who won and who lost before the awards

[ad_1]

Joanna Robinson: What does it look like when a shiver like Game of Thrones – which took last year off – returns to dominate the season once again rewards? That was the big question that arose in the Emmy nominations of 2018. Although the show has long been a major player, it was feared that its seventh stunned season, which debuted there are around 39 years ago. one year, faded in the minds of the voters at the time of the appointments. Game of Thrones also took a gamble by subjecting two of its stars – Kit Harington and Emilia Clarke – in the main cast categories, rather than supporting , for

This gambit has not been successful – which means that the flagship series of HBO has only got three nominations in the main categories of actors, for brothers and sisters. sisters on the screen Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Lena Headey, and Peter Dinklage Thrones still topping the nominations, with 22 in total, but his chief competition , Westworld and The Handmaid's Tale, were right behind with 21 and 20, respectively. Netflix has won more nominations than HBO: from 112 to 108, which broke HBO's 17-year-old series as the most-acclaimed television network. Sonia, is this just a case of Game of Thrones overtaking his hand in certain categories – or could it be the beginning of the end of a dynasty?

Sonia Saraiya: It must be the beginning of the end, right? I mean, do not get me wrong: I imagine that the last episode of Game of Thrones will be a contest game, and it's hard to judge voters who do not care when most of 39 among us have forgotten that ] Thrones was even eligible this year, although it was broadcast this time . But this small number of acting appointments suggests a decreasing interest.

Instead, it seemed that voters were really interested in the deep benches of ensemble sets in Westworld and The Handmaid's Tale. I did not even recognize the name of Kelly Jenrette, one of the guest actress nominations for the Hulu drama, but you'd better know who she is now.

It's interesting: the Academy avoided rewarding genre shows for a long time, but now it seems like the genre is where it lives. These are the more traditional dramas that have fallen by the wayside this year: Billions, I thought I had a chance to fight, and Killing Eve – who did Sandra Oh the first Asian actress nominated for a lead role was excluded from the outstanding drama race. Meanwhile, Stranger Things burst into the upper category, which is sweet but. . . completely weird? And Tatiana Maslany was nominated for a show that I had not realized was even eligible this year.

Joanna, I know you're about to say something clever but let me shout a little: SANDRA OH: NOMINATED FOR THE BEST ACTRESS

Robinson: You know I'm on record with my love Killing Eve . Can I join you in shouting all the caps, but in the other way? OH MY GOD, HOW COULD FORGET KYLE MACLACHLAN ! With nine nominations, Twin Peaks was not completely neglected – but can you believe that the very ambitious, 18-episode The Return was not nominated in the category of limited series, and that his leader has been misunderstood for the three (THREE!) brilliant performances that he has achieved? It's amazing.

At least his co-star Laura Dern received an appointment for his truly incredible turn in HBO The Tale. I do not see how anyone beats this performance in the lead actress category in a limited series, and it's a bit unfair to put television performances against something that, at least Sundance, was considered a potential role Oscar. Dern seems mostly a lock considering all the benevolence of the television academy she has since Big Little Lies.

As I started this section with an exclamation of disappointment, it's just that I end with an expression of joy – for the long, long, and long recognition of Emmy for Kenan Thompson, who had a record 15 seasons on Saturday Night Live. Aidy Bryant, Leslie Jones, Kate McKinnon, and the Chief Presidential Imitator Himself, Alec Baldwin . McKinnon's two-game winning streak and Baldwin's victory last year make it inevitable that at least a of the S.N.L. The cast members will go home with an Emmy this year, and I hope that's Thompson.

Saraiya: I am so curious about the confluence of the factors that led to Thompson getting an Emmy nomination 15 years after his arrival. show, but I do not complain. The lock Saturday Night Live on the Emmys is sometimes a little frustrating, but considering the players who come to get their first appointments, it seems that at least the voters appreciate not only the political performance of the show, but the hard work of a week to keep the show interesting.

Joanna, I am also quite disappointed with Twin Peaks – especially since she was beaten by people like TNT Alienist and Nat Geo Genius: Picasso, who also drew Antonio Banderas a lead actor nomination. It is always difficult to understand with what show the voters of the Academy are excited and which never arouse their interest. This year was the last opportunity for the Halt and Catch Fire to be named, but the Emmys have never noticed this show – and they were not about to start now . (Sorry, Lee Pace. )

I also wish that the Emmys found a little more love in their hearts for BoJack Horseman, who n? has never been nominated for exceptional animated series. One day at a time, a high talk, the right place, dear Whites -if many of my favorite shows this year do not get Emmy voters the same way they're me receive.

you can see these splinters where the industry is heating up to change, be it the historical recognition of Oh, appointment of Ted Danson for The Good Place, or the late nominations for FX The Americans – Four plums nods for its last season. And in the comedy series, eight shows have been nominated, which is surprising for a category that should only carry six honors

Has any of the snobs or surprises really scored you? I confess that Alison Brie would not have been my choice for the lead actress in a comedy – but I'm still shocked that she did not was nominated, given his record of fantastic performances and his turn as Ruth on GLOW

Robinson: If I'm honest, if I had to pick someone out of GLOW to name, it would have been Betty Gilpin for his great work of support. So, I think it's a case where the taste of the TV Academy and my taste align perfectly. As for the actress category in a comedy, it is, of course, more open than it has been for a long time, given that the perpetual laureate Julia Louis-Dreyfus is not eligible for the first time in six years. The favorite in this category is the great Rachel Brosnahan, who won a Golden Globe victory for The Wonderful Mrs. Maisel earlier this year.

But a real potential black horse there Pamela Adlon, who won a 2017 Peabody Award for his work on the Better Things of FX The TV Academy likes to recognize multi-faceted talents like Donald Glover and Aziz Ansari, who are not only the stars of their shows, but also creative ones. As the director of each episode of the second season of her show and author of several of them, Adlon is a real force to be reckoned with. It may, however, come up against resistance because of its long collaboration with the late Louis C.K., who served as executive producer and co-writer on Better Things. In other words, politically, this could be a difficult victory for her.

And speaking of politics, one last disappointment I would like to record is with Seth Meyers being neglected for the fourth year in a row. Much has been said about the appointment of Samantha Bee which took place shortly after a public scandal with Ivanka Trump, and which served as an anti-white house sentiment to the 39, Television Academy. And Bee is not the only one when it comes to the politically heavy late-night nominees; HBO John Oliver and Trevor Noah of Comedy Central also won nods. But what, I ask you, does Seth Meyers have to do to get a nomination for his show? Host the Emmys? Oh, wait; he did it years ago. Get the Vanity Fair HWD Newsletter
