BEIJING – Huawei Technologies unveiled last Friday its long-awaited internal operating system, Harmony OS, marking the biggest effort of the Chinese technology giant to create its own software ecosystem.

This decision should also offset the influence of US government policy. restrictions about the use of Google's Android operating system in smartphones and other hardware.

Yu Chengdong, CEO of Huawei's consumer business group, said an operating system was needed to meet the challenges of the IoT era and that it was difficult to provide a seamless experience on different devices with millions of lines of code.

Unlike the long-awaited name of HongMeng, Huawei has adopted Harmony for its internal operating system to solve all these problems.

According to Mr. Yu, some Harmony features have already been used in his models of high-end smartphones and other devices.

When asked if Harmony could be used in his smartphones, Yu replied, "Of course, it can be used in smartphones. But Android remains Huawei's preferred choice for handsets, given the status quo ecosystem. However, when Android is not available, Harmony can be applied immediately to smartphones. "

Yu pointed out that Harmony is the next-generation system based on a micro-kernel and that it can be distributed in all scenarios, including smart TVs, automobiles, wearable devices and other hardware.

Huawei said to have more than 500 million registered users and 910,000 mobile application developers on the Huawei platform.
