The new technology of Vivo X21, introduced in the Philippines on June 21, replaced the rear fingerprint sensor not only to achieve a sleek and unified design, but also to deliver an immersive smartphone experience.

So, how does it work the fingerprint scanner? It all comes down to science and meticulous research.

When the user's finger touches the screen to unlock it, the Vivo X21's Super AMOLED display emits light to illuminate the finger. The optical impression sensor under the OLED screen captures the light reflected by the fingerprint. Based on the light reflected by the unique edges on the fingerprint, the sensor processes the optical signals to provide sharp and accurate fingerprint images for adaptation.

In addition, when fingerprint recognition is required, such as when the screen is off and to unlock applications, a fingerprint recognition icon will appear on the screen so that the users can tap an immediate authentication. Otherwise, the fingerprint icon is invisible to ensure a seamless mobile experience.

The current unlock speed is only 0.6 seconds.

The decision to mass-produce In-Display Technology Fingerprint Scanning Technology was made after extensive research on different biometric solutions on the market as well as on consumer habits and market needs. As a reminder, Vivo has several research and development centers around the world, including the United States (San Diego) and China (Shenzhen, Dongguan, Nanjing, Hangzhou and Beijing).

Perfecting the fingerprint scanning technology on the screen was not a trivial matter, as the integration of the sensor into the internal design and screen of the Vivo X21 accounted for a huge challenge. Vivo had to redesign the internal structure of the phone to bring this vision to life.

At MWC Shanghai 2017, Vivo unveiled the first Vivo Under-Display digital fingerprint solution. Then, at CES 2018, the global smartphone brand introduced a ready-to-use smartphone with the industry's first In-Display Fingerprint Scanning Technology.

The Vivo X21 with pioneering in-display fingerprint scanning technology is available for P29,999 in participating stores:
