KOTA KINABALU: In spite of its low probability, a geology expert warned of the tsunami risks to which the city of Lahad Datu is exposed because of the submarine earthquakes that hit the waters of Lahad Datu, the Philippines or from Indonesia. Professor Felix Tongkul of Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) said the possibility that Lahad Datu is affected by the tsunami was based on the fact that it was known as one of the sites with tremors frequent land except for Ranau. This, he said, is due to two active mistakes in the district. some epicentres of the earthquake have been detected in the ocean. He added that strong shocks could cause a submarine landslide, likely to cause a tsunami. "A tsunami could still occur at Lahad Datu even though the probability is low because of its relatively shallow water. "We need a deeper sea to deal with a major tsunami," he told NSTP. Felix, who is also the director of the University's Center for Disaster Studies, also said that the east coast regions, which range from Kudat to Tawau, are at high risk of being affected by the tsunami if Underwater earthquakes occur off coastal areas such as Peparit (Trenches) Manila, Mindoro and Cotabato in the Philippines Peparit Sulawesi Utara in Indonesia. He added that the tsunami tidal wave that could reach 5 to 5 meters from the Philippines or Indonesia could spread in less than 30 minutes to the most affected area, namely Tawau. At the same time, the west coast of Sabah, including the capital, is also threatened, but less than that of the east coast. © New Straits Times Press (M) Bhd
