At least 15 patients from the National Institute of Kidney and Transplantation died last month of leptospirosis, a bacterial infection transmitted by the rat.

Leptospirosis is a bacterial infection caused by Leptospira. spirochete bacteria that spread in the urine of infected animals, especially rats. Its modes of transmission include escape into contaminated flood waters and the ingestion of contaminated food or water.
