LinkedIn has added voicemail to its platform. This means that you can now record and send a voice message to someone on LinkedIn, saving you the time and effort required to write a message. Nobody asked, but LinkedIn thinks it's a good idea anyway.

Why LinkedIn? Why voicemail?

You may be wondering why LinkedIn would add voicemail. Well, LinkedIn has predicted the answer to this feature, and has exposed a trio of reasons why you might want to use voicemail. As explained on the LinkedIn blog:

Voice mail makes it easier to contact people on the move. Because, if you're busy doing something else, talking in a microphone is easier than typing. And since most people speak faster than what they type, voice mail can save you time.

Voicemail is less intrusive for the recipient. If you call someone, you basically ask him to drop what he does to talk to you. A voice message is more permanent and can stay there until the recipient is ready to answer.

Voicemail allows you to communicate on a personal level. Written messages can sometimes be read as dry, with a lack of personality shining through. The desired tone can also be lost between the time you write it and the person reading it.

How to use LinkedIn voicemail

You can use voicemail via the LinkedIn application on Android and iOS. To record a voice message, simply tap the Microphone icon in the mobile messaging keyboard. Then press the new Microphone icon to record your message and release it to send it.

You can cancel sending a voice message by moving your finger away from the microphone during recording. Which will be a boon if you say the wrong thing, stumble over your words, or use the wrong tone. All this could make you less professional.

As if endless emails are not so bad

LinkedIn is famous for flooding your inbox with emails. Which is all kinds of boring. Now, imagine this barrage of emails sent as voice mail, and you'll understand why this new feature has not been enthusiastically received by LinkedIn's regular users.

However, it can not be denied that, with or without voicemail, LinkedIn can be an extremely useful tool. So why not check out the features of LinkedIn that you should use
