CEBU CITY – More than P7 million worth of shakes were arrested in a series of anti-illegal drug operations in Talisay City last Tuesday.
The target of the operations, Rinel Cortes, eluded arrest.
Cortes "is a big-time drug lord who distributes illegal drugs in all Cebu. He owns a warehouse in Talisay where shabu is being kept, "said Sr. Insp. Alejandro Batobalanos, chief of the Cebu Provincial Police's Drug Enforcement Unit.
In the first operation at around 2 p.m. in a subdivision in Barangay Lawaan 1, about 240 grams of shabu worth R2.8 million was seized from Cheryl Villamedo Herongay, 30.
Also nabbed were Herongay's siblings Essel, 37; and Jeromy, 20; Teodoro Templatura Alisoso Jr., 31; Rolly Cejudo Flores, 30; Suzette Encabo Bobier, 28; and Jhon Edward Segundo Cañedo, 19.
Police also found firearms, including a submachine gun pistol, in the house where the suspects were arrested.
Police said the group has a hit man who usually escorted Herongay when she collects payments from bosses.
An hour later, the same police unit arrested 50-year-old Arnel Baclay of Lima in Barangay Dumlog.
Shabu weighing 375 grams amounting to R4.4 million was seized from Lima, police said.
Batobalanos said the team proceeded to Cortes' house which was also located in Dumlog but did not find him there.
Batobalanos said Cortes may have sensed the presence of police after mediamen and reported the first two operations through Facebook live.
Before the operations, undercover police were able to buy 60 grams of shabu worth P500,000 from Cortes and his alleged runner, Joshua Tan. (With Dave Albarado)
