DAVAO CITY — The Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) and the Department of Education (DepEd) came up with a five-year sports development plan to jumpstart their collaboration in strengthening the country’s grassroots sports program.

The framework of the plan was finalized after two days of strategic planning here attended by nearly 60 officials from the two government agencies.

The plan centered on grassroots sports, governance and leadership of the agencies, human resource capacity-building, infrastructure and facilities, collaboration and linkages locally and internationally, and research and development.

PSC chairman Butch Ramirez and DepEd assistant secretary Revsee Escobedo underscored the importance of these topics to arrive at their mission of having a formative physical education and sports program among the youth, a more effective governance with competent leaders in the two agencies, a more responsive educational and training programs for coaches and trainers and a standardized sports facilities.

“It’s not going to be smooth-sailing and fast, but in tackling these areas, we’ll have a clearer direction of our national sports development program,” said Ramirez.

Ramirez added the program not only focuses on bolstering the country’s talent-identification program but is also helping in upgrading sports education among coaches and trainers around the country.
