Raptor Ranger: what's inside, outside and under Ford's new performance truck

Raptor. The name alone is enough to speed up the pulse of truck lovers. It was attached to only two Ford products: consecutive generations of the massive F150 pickup. The F150 Raptor was aimed at bringing some of the performance of a Baja racing truck to a road vehicle.

Now, it has been added to a pickup that will bring the performance brand to a global audience, very soon the Philippines: the Ford Ranger. The all-new Ranger Raptor is a performance truck, unlike anything we've seen before. It combines a striking offroad capability, both at speed and rocking-down, with a refinement that makes it a practical everyday vehicle.

Here are the important features of the Raptor Ranger:

Engine: ] Raptor Ranger is powered by a twin-turbo 2.0-liter engine, producing 213 ps and 500Nm. A pair of turbos feeds the air of this diesel engine. The sequential-turbo configuration eliminates delays and extends the power band into the higher speed range.

Transmission: Six speeds are so yesterday. The Raptor Ranger has a 10 speed automatic speed for a wider range of gears. It has been used with a lot of effect in the Mustang and F150, offering faster acceleration. The changes are fast and imperceptible, apart from the hollow in the tachometer needle. Shift paddles allow manual control

Enhanced Performance Suspension: This is the basis of the Ranger Raptor's outstanding performance. Ford widened the front and rear track by 150 mm and installed Raptor-specific aluminum double wishbones at the front, with forged top units and a coil spring suspension at the rear. Reinforced attachment points promote stability and durability.

Fox performance dampers with variable damping rates are consistent with the center of the suspension race, while hardening near the limit of the race. The result is a pickup that offers incredibly smooth and comfortable driving, even on rough terrain. The ground clearance is increased by 50mm to reach a high level of 283mm.

Tires: Part of the tuning of the suspension is a specially made tire, the BF Goodrich All-Terrain K02. The 285/70 R 17 tires were suitable for our journey from the city to the Outback. Massive tires are quiet and confident on asphalt (aka asphalt), while scraping up and down effectively comes the creepy weather.

Search: The FORD brand grille is in front and in the center of the Raptor. Important wing wideners cover the widened track. A visually distinct bumper also highlights the width. The thick plates at the front and wide side steps complete the off-road racy look

Seats: The contoured front seats are trimmed with suede leather inserts. They are comfortable during hours of driving and keep you in place when you tackle off-road trails.

Terrain Management System: The Ford Terrain Management System is activated by the steering wheel buttons. There is Normal, Sport, Mud and Sand mode. There's also the Baja mode, which controls traction control for high-speed off-road performance, allowing you to get the most out of it.

The low-range four-wheel drive system is activated by a console button. There is a lockable rear differential and an electronic hill descent control.

The Raptor Ranger uses as a base the chassis capable of the ordinary Ford Ranger, but with all its improvements, it's a completely different beast. Its off-road performance is amazing, and the improvements in comfort make it a high-performance truck that's also a family car.
