NEW DELHI – Rescuers found nine bodies while they were almost done cleaning up a mound of rubble after The collapse of two multi-storey buildings east of New Delhi, said Thursday an official.

No survivors were found after the collapse on Tuesday night of a six-story building under construction in an adjacent four-story building. The second building, ready to move in, tumbled under the impact of the first building.

Rescuers are waiting to end their work later on Thursday, said Anil Shekhawat, a spokeswoman for the National Disaster Response Force. Rescuers with cranes, hammers and chainsaws worked at the removal of debris in Shahberi village, about 40 kilometers east of New Delhi

The owner of the building under construction and his two associates were arrested on charges of culpable homicide, said the press agency Press Trust of India. The cause of the collapse was not immediately known.

The collapse of buildings is common in India during the June-September monsoon, when heavy rains weaken the foundations of poorly constructed structures.
