The government is ready to apply the suggested retail price of rice to markets in Metro Manila on Saturday. Even some industry players have asked for a three-day reprieve to prepare for the price schedule.

Agriculture Secretary Emmanuel F. Piñol said the SRP was scheduled to start on October 23, but was postponed until Oct. 27, as stakeholders in the rice industry requested an extension of three days to prepare the signage of their points of sale.

Under the PRS guidelines, agreed between the Ministry of Agriculture, rice farmers, mills, traders and retailers, rice sold in retail markets would be identified as imported or locally produced.

In addition, rice varieties would be correctly classified according to grain quality and corresponding PRS:

Imported whitened rice (25 percent broken): 39 pesos per kilogram;

High quality imported rice: 43 pesos per kilogram;

Ground rice of local production: 39 kg / kg;

Well ground rice produced locally: 44 pesos per kilogram; and

High quality rice produced locally: 47 pesos per kilogram;

"No one can sell Sinandomeng anymore. There will be more Super Angelica. There will be no Yum-yum too, "Piñol said in a recent interview with reporters. "These varieties do not exist."

According to Piñol, the government would not issue SRPs for special rice varieties, including traditional rice, brown, red and black organic rice and Milagrosa, among others.

In addition, the SRP guidelines provided heavy fines for retailers in error, which would come into force 15 days after publication.

"Sanctions and sanctions would include the cancellation of NFA licenses, stiff fines and criminal prosecution," Piñol said.

"Stakeholders however agreed that even before the entry into force of sanctions and sanctions, they were willing to implement the PRS on Saturday to show their support for President Rody Duterte's efforts to stabilize the prices of goods on the market, "he said. added.

Piñol said the PRS for rice sold in supermarkets and other dry markets of various regions and provinces would be discussed next week with industry stakeholders.

"The SRP in Metro Manila and [Greater Manila Area] will be launched at an official ceremony to be held at the Commonwealth market on Saturday at 7 am, "he said.
