Samsung has filed a patent to the USPTO and WIPO on October 18 for a “method for acquiring biometric information and electronic device supporting the same” and an in-display fingerprint sensor technology.
Samsung’s patent is not an optical under-display fingerprint sensor, like all the smartphone makers have been implementing in their products until now. Samsung has patented a new biometric technology method that makes it viable to use the entire display as a fingerprint reader. The patent details a smartphone from the South Korean technology titan with a single or two chipsets. A The primary processor and a second power-efficient processor, the latter is dedicated for the biometric sensor, the touch sensor and the lighting sensor.
When the smartphone is locked, the additional processor can perform all tasks independently, so that the key processor can remain in hibernation mode and thus save on battery juices.
As soon as a touch is detected on the screen display, the brightness of the smartphone will be increased, after which an accurate fingerprint scan can be made. A total of three scans will be made and the biometric information gathered will be combined for a more reliable authentication process. This technique would also make it plausible to authenticate a wet or dirty finger.
The three scans will be performed within 60 to 90 milliseconds. The patent does not give a definite answer how fast it will be unlocked once you place you finger on the screen.
