(CNN) – Irish singer Sinead O'Connor said she converted to Islam and changed her name.

On October 19, she tweeted that she had become Muslim and that she would call "Shuhada", which means "martyrs" in Arabic.

Among the recent articles of the 51 year old woman are pictures of her wearing a hijab and a video of her singing the call to prayer of Muslims.

This announcement was warmly welcomed by Muslims online.

Last year, she changed her name to "Magda Davitt", which she said meant "no parental curses".

The singer "Nothing Compares 2 You" made the headlines in 1992 by tearing a picture of Pope John Paul II during an appearance on American television.

More recently, she has been dealing with a mental illness, which she has discussed openly on social media.
