Supreme Court names Donnybrook
Senators occupy positions on the Hill. All 49 Democrats must stay together to win, plus a pro-choice Republican woman.
Do not even call the candidate a "conservative pillar". Call Brett Michael Kavanaugh a right wing partisan warrior.
President Donald Trump knows how to choose them, like raspberries on a vine.
With the show, Trump introduced Kavanaugh to the nation as his high court candidate, as if he were the next "Apprentice". Which, in a way, it is. Trump likes picks that "watch the game".
Yet, under the Ivy polish, Kavanaugh is the city's most naughty Republican, right behind Trump.
Washington recalls its fierce pursuit of President Bill Clinton in 1998 and 1999 as a staff for Kenneth Starr's investigation into a case that did not fit a mountain of beans into this crazy world.
Kavanaugh, author of the impudently salacious report in his early thirties, made a name for himself in the Starr Room.
Judges are supposed to have some measure of pity. Kavanaugh did not show any to Clinton nor, incidentally, to young Monica Lewinsky. Starr's lawyers lodged, threatened and interrogated him for nearly 12 hours.
Well, it was show business in the late '90s. But Kavanaugh had just started his take-no-prisoners approach. In late 2000, he joined George W. Bush's legal team, to ensure that a man who lost the popular vote would become president. Compliments of the stop 5-4 Bush c. Gore of the Supreme Court. That's what Republicans mean by "a man, a voice".
Justice Anthony Kennedy, for whom Kavanaugh was cleric, was one of five. His place is the empty seat that Kavanaugh aspires to fill. It's nice when things are fine.
Then Kavanaugh polished his White House resume by working at the Bush White House, rubbing shoulders with the president. Do they have banter about their wives coming from West Texas?
By the time I write, Kavanaugh is coming down to the Senate to meet Republican leader Mitch McConnell, not wasting time after the announcement. An insightful general on the Hill, McConnell, R-Ky., Is expected by the experts to take it away.
But do not count canny Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y. The Democratic leader has Kavanaugh's number. He knows who he is. It can be a small town where people know the good and the bad on both sides.
Schumer will set his party's ground on affordable health care and reproductive rights, each on the line.
Kavanaugh skillfully reworked his position power over time, at the White House and as a federal judge. Whoever would have happily chased a popular president in times of peace and prosperity now says that a president should be left alone to interpret the Constitution as he sees fit. They should not be prosecuted, investigated or even interrogated during their tenure, as was Clinton
Kavanaugh, who defends the vast presidential power, makes him the darling – or the apprentice – from the Russian investigation of Robert Mueller
he adapted to the robes of the Supreme Court. And he is only 53 years old.
Once again, Trump proves the master of distraction. Remember the separation of families at the border and the resignation of Scott Pruitt at the head of the Environmental Protection Agency in disgrace? Old news now.
In advance, if you thought June was hot, July would burn. Trump could tear up the NATO summit on small changes. He may say something left on the tea with the queen, like asking what Buckingham Palace is worth.
Then there is a small festival of love in Helsinki, Finland. If Trump treats Russian President Vladimir Putin better than NATO allies, then our world will be turned upside down.
But the odds! And do not forget to look at "Apprentice to the President: Supreme Court Season."
