President Maithripala Sirisena reiterated today that he was going to apply the death penalty to people found guilty but still involved in drug trafficking from prisons, even in the midst of obstacles .
The president said that the front page of a newspaper had published an article claiming that the government would reconsider its decision to apply the death penalty.
"It's completely wrong, and no matter what type of objection, the necessary measures will be taken to apply the death penalty against drug traffickers," he said.

The president said that he summoned the heads of all the hunches in the areas of law and order, justice and prisons for a discussion next Tuesday. He stated that a committee composed of these people would be appointed to decide who will be executed and the dates.
President Sirisena said that some sections had raised some objections against this decision to apply the death penalty. "But those who raise objections have not brought any help to put an end to this destructive problem in the country."
