A series of bizarre incidents involving needles coming out of Hong Kong bus seats has caused panic among some passengers. During the past week, six cases of needles planted in KMB double-decker bus seats have injured at least two passengers. In another incident, a toothpick was found in one seat and two cases of seats were nicked in buses. There were two new incidents on Wednesday. In one case, a passenger spotted a needle on one seat and in the other, a bus user ran toward the driver to report that there were three needles under a seat
1. On which KMB bus routes did they find needles?
The first case involved a bus on Tsim Sha Tsui East Road 41A in Tsing Yi on Wednesday night. A woman got on the bus to Yau Ma Tei and sat on the upper deck without realizing that a needle had been planted on her seat, injuring her hip. About an hour later, another woman was injured in the thigh by a needle on the upper deck on Highway 48X between Sha Tin and Tsuen Wan.

The next day another needle was spotted on a bus from Highway 81, but no one was injured. Needles were also seen on buses 46, 17, 81, 59M and 235M. Among the wounded women, one said that she had not been infected. The other would have been only slightly injured.
2. Who is guilty?
Police investigate incidents but there were no arrests. Dennis Wong Sing-wing, a professor of criminology at City University, believes that needle planting is probably a person's job because of the similarity between cases. "It could be the same author who hates KMB a lot and has acted to fight back," he said. Wong added that it was possible that the culprit had a grudge against the company because a family member or friend had been a victim of a road accident. It was also possible that the culprit had planted the needles angry with a bad bus driver.

3. How did the KMB react?
The company – Hong Kong's largest bus operator – "handled these incidents seriously and firmly condemned" the one who planted the needles, said deputy operations director Patrick Pang Shu-hung. KMB asked the drivers to perform more checks on the buses. He also urged passengers to carefully check their seats before sitting down, and that they should immediately contact the police and the company if they find anything suspicious.
