LONDON – Fifty years ago, the Beatles were photographed crossing a leafy street in North London, creating one of the most famous album covers in the history of music and since then imitating countless fans.

The photo of John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr walking on a zebra crossing on Abbey Road was taken in front of the EMI recording studio, where they realized the 1969 album of the same name and almost all their other recordings.

The Scottish photographer Iain Macmillan took only six shots of the group during the crossing, the fifth having served as cover for the group's eleventh studio album, released on September 26, 1969.

"Abbey Road", voted the Beatles' best album by Rolling Stone's readers in 2009, was the only original British album of the group not to display the band's name or a title on the cover.
