As a result of Twitter's sanitising move, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi lost nearly 300,000 followers while Congress Party President Rahul Gandhi lost over 17,000 followers. Modi's followers went down from 43.4 million to 43.1 million.
The official handle of the PMO (@PMOIndia) lost 140,635 followers.

Bollywood megastar Amitabh Bachchan's extended family on Twitter dropped by over 424,000. This year, Bachchan, one of the most widely followed Indian celebrities on the platform, has been reported to be a new developer account application process that include use case reviews and policy compliance checks, as well as new protections to prevent the registration of spammy and low-quality apps.
"Starting today," said Twitter.
Following application approval, the developers may be required to undergo additional changes in their content.
"We're also trying to reduce the number of applications that we can get by using the API Policy support form," Twitter informed.

By default, an app (across all of its users) will be limited to 300 tweets and retweets (combined) per three hours; 1,000 likes per 24 hours; 1,000 following for 24 hours and 15,000 Direct Messages per 24 hours.
Twitter also introduced a new option for people to report violations of its platform policies.
"You can use the 'Report a bad app' option in our Help Center to report our APIs which produce spam, invade user privacy, or otherwise violate our rules," Twitter noted.
