Announced Thursday in Beijing's Forbidden City, the Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 is the latest addition to Xiaomi's all-screen flagship phone line. Powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 processor, it features a 6.39-inch screen like the Mi Mix with a resolution of 2,340 x 1,080 pixels, or 93.4% of the body. (The Mi Mix 2 is just 5.99 inches, in comparison). If you followed all the 5G things, you may have heard that Xiaomi was working on one of the first 5G compatible phones you can buy. This seems to be the case, but you will have to wait until next year to get it.

It has four cameras – two at the front and back – as well as a huge 10GB variant of RAM. The capacity of the battery is less than 3,200 mAh – we have already seen larger ones in other Xiaomi phones like the Mi Max 3 – if the phone supports wireless charging. The fingerprint sensor stays at the back of the phone.

The Mi Mix 3 is also offered in a 5G version presented by Xiaomi as the first commercially available phone of this type, but should not be launched until the first quarter of next year. This could disappoint fans who were excited about a leak showing a 5G support on the phone last month, but the delay will not matter even if 5G features were available on it, you will not be able to use it until the network deployment is complete. This is true even in the country of origin of Xiaomi, even though China is at the forefront of the development of 5G.

In terms of design, the Mi Mix 3 takes a step closer to the loss of his chin. Previously, Mi Mix phones had a lower frame – now reduced to 4.46 mm – housing the selfie camera. But the cameras have now been moved to a magnetic slider on the phone. You can drag the entire screen down to answer or customize calls to launch different functions. This feature is similar to those of the recent Oppo Find X and Huawei's Honor Magic 2, which will be launched on October 31st.

You'll be able to customize the sound of the phone when you slide the screen, but I guess it will always end up being annoying. You can see what I mean here:

The Mi Mix 3 is equipped with powerful front and rear cameras. At the back, two 12 megapixel rear cameras – wide angle and telephoto – with apertures of f1.8 and f2.4, respectively, capable of supporting slow motion video at 960 fps. For selfie enthusiasts, the Mi Mix 3 is equipped with a 24 megapixel main camera and a 2 megapixel secondary camera. These can be found on the retractable module with a soft light.

The cameras also feature AI-based features including artificial intelligence, AI portrait mode and AI studio lighting at the front and back. The rear cameras also have AI scene detection and AI background music, which automatically adds sound to your videos. Xiaomi also said that an AI face-unlocking feature will be added in future updates, but that this feature will be limited to selected markets.

The Mi Mix 3 will be available in three versions. You can get 6GB or 8GB of RAM and 128GB of built-in storage, or the high-end model with 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage. It will be available in three colors: onyx black, jade green and sapphire blue.

The 10GB variant of RAM (with 256GB of built-in storage) is unveiled as a special edition of the Forbidden City available in a different blue hue, featuring a mythical Chinese gold beast called Xie Zhi.

Xiaomi's Mi Mix phones are traditionally the most expensive, and configurations with more storage usually cost more. The Mi Mix 3 is priced like the Mi Mix 2S was when he launched. The base model will start at 3,299 yuan (about $ 475, £ 370 or AU $ 675) and the high-end model will be at 3,999 yuan. The global availability of the phone has not been revealed, but it will go on sale for the first time in China on November 1st.

The special edition of the Forbidden City has a higher price and will cost 4,999 yuan when sold at the end of next month.
