The Phillies signed a one-year, $ 6 million contract with free-agent reliever Archie Bradley, a source confirmed. The deal is pending a physical.
Bradley, a 28-year-old right-hander, began his career as a starter with the Diamondbacks in 2015 before settling as facility manager in 2017. He pitched well at the back of the paddock. Arizona relievers until the trade deadline of 2020, when it was distributed to the Reds and posted a 1.17 ERA last month. New Phillies pitching coach Caleb Cotham has arrived from Cincinnati.
Bradley has a 2.95 ERA in 221 appearances over the past four seasons, mostly as a setup man. He also saved 18 games for the Diamondbacks in 2019 when he was put on duty after Greg Holland’s struggles.
Bradley’s fastball averaged 94.4 mph last season. Historically, it has been primarily the four-seam fastpitch and the curveball, with a few pellets and shifts mixed in.
He’s the third reliever the Phillies have added since the last week of December. The first two trades for new president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski were left-hander Jose Alvarado of the Rays and right-hander Sam Coonrod of the Giants.
