After the Phillies made the surprising decision to pick Scott kingery At Triple-A, manager Joe Girardi needed a utility option for his opening roster. Torreyes, 28, appeared in four games for the Phillies in 2020, although he saw significant playing time with the Yankees from 2016 to 2018. Also appearing for the Dodgers and Twins, Torreyes has a .277 / line. .306 / .369 in career. 639 appearances on the set in six years. He mainly split his time between second, third and short, although he technically saw the time in all three positions on the pitch, but sparingly.
The Phillies also announced the exit of CJ Chatham, by Athletic’s Matt Gelb (via Twitter). The right-handed fielder and former Red Sox second-round pick was another contender for the roster that went to Torreyes. Chatham is yet to make his Major League debut, although he has posted a solid season in senior minors in 2019. He scored a .297 / .333 / .403 in 376 home plate appearances in Double-A. and a .302 / .333 / .430 in 91 appearances on the set with Triple-A Pawtucket.
Torreyes’ presence on the list likely means that only two Adam haseley, Roman quinn, and Odubel herrera will make the team. The most likely outcome is that Haseley will start the season in the minors. He still has options and has missed much of the spring with an injury. Quinn has the best numbers this spring with a .294 / .351 / .441 line on a 38-plate look, and with he’s out of options, it’s safe to assume he’ll make the list. . That said, the stats themselves aren’t necessarily the barometer Girardi and his company use to make those roster decisions.
Philadelphia has two open spots on its 40-player roster. Torreyes needs one of these places, however, and Matt Joyce would need it too if he’s on the team. Herrera and Brandon kintzler are also candidates on the list who should be added to the 40 men.
