ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski reported on Tuesday what has been streaming online for months: that Philadelphia 76ers star Ben Simmons will not show up to training camp and is done playing for the team.
Simmons has had an acrimonious offseason with the Sixers after having a poor playoff performance against the Atlanta Hawks that essentially forced a divorce between the two sides. Understandably, his camp at Klutch Sports has sprouted stories as to why he wants to leave, while the 76ers have attempted to trade him into monstrously unrealistic trade packages they’ve reportedly passed on to the Golden State Warriors, among others.
In sports radio land of Philadelphia, it seems Tuesday’s Woj bombshell, on the heels of a summer filled with salacious basketball rumors, sparked shock. Mike Missanelli of the “Mike Missanelli Show” on 97.5 The fanatic has had enough of West Coast reporters defending Simmons, who is being replaced by the same influential agency as LeBron James. So he launched a dramatic rant, citing both a Lakers reporter and a Warriors reporter for alleged crimes against humanity.
“There’s a difference between good journalism, which I see dead with this social media shit, and all these people on social media reporting nonsense, trying to win favor with powerful agencies, hoping that they will get information about LeBron James, ”said Missanelli.
He then mentioned Harrison Faigen, who is a Lakers beat writer and editor of Silver Screen and Roll, an SB Nation website. Faigen posted a pretty harmless joke why Simmons might not want to play in Philadelphia anymore, which Missanelli took as an affront. First of all, however, he admitted that he didn’t know what SB Nation is, which makes his accusation that Faigen is pro-Lakers, pro-LeBron, and pro-Rich Paul / Klutch Sports a bit more. doubtful.
“A total effort for the Klutch Agency group like Ben Simmons did nothing wrong,” Missanelli said.
Missanelli’s second call was a bit more rude – he referred to KRON4 News sporting director Jason Dumas, which pays that part of the reason Simmons doesn’t want to go to camp is that he expects fans to show up and boo him.
When Missanelli brought up the Dumas report, he added a dismissive “whoever it is.” And here’s the thing: as Dumas later tweeted, he’s from Philadelphia, and internal for Missanelli. So Missanelli is either a crappy boss or he pretends not to remember someone for the little phrase.
Anyway, here’s what Missanelli said about Dumas: “Did you go to bed thinking you could put a stupid story on social media and have the nation believe it? We live in this city! We’ve never heard of it! “
Missanelli concluded her temper tantrum with a literal “beep you!” for Faigen and Dumas. Alas, Ben Simmons is still not going to show up for training camp.
