Trent Reznor, Mike Gordon of Phish and the Tedeschi Trucks group are among the artists joining the Tipitina live program this weekend. The free “ Save Tip ” live streaming event aims to raise funds to help the iconic New Orleans location stay afloat in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic. The event airs on Tipitina’s website on Saturday at 9 p.m. ET.
Featuring new and old performances from the vault, the three-hour event will also include exclusive behind-the-scenes stories from the venue. Reznor and Gordon are among those who contribute their own stories. The evening will also feature tributes to Dr John, Allen Toussaint and Art Neville. The Tedeschi Trucks group contributes to a version of Dr John’s “I Walk on Guilded Splinters”.
The artists join previously announced aired performances by Galactic, Willie Nelson, Widespread Panic, Jon Batiste & Stay Human with Trombone Shorty, the Revivalists, Big Freedia, Billy Strings, Tank & the Bangas, Preservation Hall Jazz Band with Allen Toussaint, The Radiators starring Gregg Allman, Dumpstaphunk, Ivan Neville, Soul Rebels, Dinosaur Jr., Funky Meters, Professor Longhair, Fats Domino, Dr. John, Manu Chao, St. Paul & the Broken Bones, and many more artists.
“At the end of 2018, our group took a huge leap of faith to buy Tipitina’s,” Robert Mercurio, owner of Tipitina’s and member of the Galactic Group, said in a statement. “It wasn’t because we wanted to own a venue, it was because we had the chance to save our favorite venue in the world. But now we could really use a little help to keep saving this national treasure. So, New Orleans style, we decided to throw a hell of a party to celebrate this musical institution.
As part of Tipitina’s fundraising efforts, fans can also participate to win raffle experiences and prizes by donating to ‘Save Tip’s’ through the Fandiem charity platform. Prizes include the chance to win an all-expenses-paid three-day weekend in New Orleans and VIP access to the first return show at Tipitina; access to a New Orleans soundcheck; and virtual hangouts to watch the end of the show behind the scenes with Dave Schools of Widespread Panic, Galactic and Dave Shaw of the Revivalists, among other raffle prizes. Donations can also be made before the live streaming.
